Spotlight on Economic Development Grantmaking in Ohio May 2015

Foundation Center in Cleveland, in partnership with Cleveland State University, the Burton D. Morgan Foundation, and the George Gund Foundation, with additional support from the Unger Family Foundation, is pleased to present this report on economic development grantmaking in Ohio for the period 2002 to 2012. This 10-year spotlight examines the funding priorities of large private and community foundations that have engaged in supporting economic development in Ohio during the pre- and post-recessionary period. This report is the third in a series of briefs examining foundation grantmaking in the area of economic development.

Spotlight on Economic Development Grantmaking in Ohio 2011

There is a growing interest among large foundations in Ohio in supporting economic development activities in the state. According to Spotlight on Economic Development Grantmaking in Ohio, grant dollars in this category increased from $24.5 million in 2005 to $62 million in 2008, a 152% upswing. As a share of total giving in Ohio, economic development grants doubled, from 7 to 14 percent. In 2008, nearly half of these grant dollars supported employment training and services, and a quarter went for urban development projects.

Ohio: The State of Homegrown Philanthropy

Ohio's philanthropic landscape is also one of homegrown innovation, where people and organizations work together to craft new solutions to complex problems and issues. Homegrown might be used more often in reference to corn and soybeans and to Ohio industries, universities and colleges, but it also has a place in describing Ohio philanthropy.This year's report marks a special anniversary, as it is the tenth in Ohio Grantmakers Forum's (OGF) series of annual giving reports. To mark the occasion, this report provides a look back at the last decade of Ohio's charitable giving with a special "Then and Now" section.OGF's report presents a comprehensive review of data from 2005 and 2006, the most recent years for which complete IRS information is available. Additionally, we provide a snapshot of giving in the health funding area -- courtesy of responses received from the OGF Foundation 100, our purposeful sample of the state's grantmaking foundations -- and highlight some of Ohio's amazing scholarship funds that increase access to education and training for thousands of Ohio young people.

We hope that it will help you gain insights into the state of arts grantmaking in Ohio. This "Spotlight" includes side by side comparisons of arts giving to Ohio recipients from foundations in Ohio and from foundations outside the state. The report illustrates giving by specific categories within the arts (subfields) and by type of support (purpose of the grant). Data tables provide top 10 lists of the largest foundations giving to the arts in Ohio and the top 20 recipients. A mini-directory of selected Ohio and non-Ohio foundations making arts grants to Ohio recipients rounds out the picture.
