Advancing Human Rights Annual Review of Global Foundation Grantmaking: 2015 Key Findings

Advancing Human Rights Annual Review of Global Foundation Grantmaking: 2015 Key Findings

Sep 01, 2019

Candid; Human Rights Funders Network;

In 2015, familiar threats to human rights and human rights philanthropy continued. As conflicts persisted in countries like Syria, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic, the number of refugees fleeing violence and hunger soared. Extremist groups perpetrated mass violence from Nigeria and Egypt, to Kenya and France, including the targeted killing of staff from the French magazine Charlie Hedbo. Threats to closing civic space intensified as more countries adopted laws targeting and restricting organizations that work to hold governments accountable, including the funders that back them, often under the pretext of counterterrorism.Despite these many concerns, we saw inspiring advances for human rights around the world across a range of issues. Women in Saudi Arabia voted and stood for election for the very first time, and the governments of the Gambia and Nigeria outlawed female genital mutilation. The Supreme Court in the United States legalized same sex marriage, while the Irish people did so through a historic popular vote. Cuba and the U.S. restored diplomatic ties after more than five decades, and Iran signed a deal to curb its nuclear program. At the end of the year, nearly 200 countries reached the landmark Paris Agreement on climate change to mitigate global warming.Against this backdrop, in 2015 foundations allocated a total of $2.4 billion in support of human rights.

Candid; Peace and Security Funders Group;

Each year, Candid and the Peace and Security Funders Group collects and analyzes data from thousands of grants awarded by hundreds of peace and security funders. We do this for two primary reasons: to illuminate the field of peace and security grantmaking, and to provide a nuanced understanding of the issues and strategies peace and security funders support. In 2016 -- the latest year complete data is available -- 326 foundations awarded 2,605 grants, totaling $328 million in support of a more peaceful world.

San Joaquin Valley Health Fund: 2018 Policy Platform

San Joaquin Valley Health Fund: 2018 Policy Platform

Jan 01, 2018

San Joaquin Valley Health Fund; Sierra Health Foundation Center for Health Program Management;

Over the last three years, a policy committee comprised of more than 50 San Joaquin Valley Health Fund (SJVHF) nonprofit leaders has met to accelerate policy and systems changes to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable children and families and advance racial equity and social justice in the region.In order to accelerate momentum, residents and local elected officials need to work together. Recognizing that, Stockton Mayor Michael D. Tubbs and Chet P. Hewitt, President and CEO of The Center at Sierra Health Foundation, convened a Leadership Conference in October 2017 in Stockton to discuss policy priorities and to create a Leadership Executive Committee, comprised of local elected officials from the Valley advocating on a united platform of policy priorities.A joint meeting of the Leadership Executive Committee and the SJVHF Policy Committee was subsequently convened to discuss and identify a set of priorities that can advance policy change on a larger systems level.The San Joaquin Valley Health Fund believes advocating for a Golden State for All means that we do not leave anyone behind. Our fundamental rights derive, irrespective of legal status, from the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. As such, we will provide the leadership that some elected officials at the national level have failed to provide. Together, we are committed to building a movement across issues, ethnicities and counties so that future generations have a healthier future. The Valley is rising!The following are policy priorities that build upon our 2017 Policy Platform.

Peace and Security Funding Index: An Analysis of Global Foundation Grantmaking - 2017 Edition

Apr 03, 2017

Foundation Center; Peace and Security Funders Group;

The 2017 Index tracks funding across 23 diverse issue areas, many of which overlap with other sectors, like climate, democracy-building, gender equality, and migration. The existence of peaceful, stable societies is critical to the success of other areas of work: children cannot be educated, health care clinics cannot provide services, and economic development projects will fail if people are experiencing violent conflict in their communities. In other words, peace and security funders are the "ground zero" of the philanthropic community: their work provides a foundation upon which other interventions can blossom and grow.It is this interconnectedness with other issues that makes peace and security grantmaking ever more important. We hope that foundations, policymakers, and civil society organizations will use the 2017 Index to advocate for increased attention to this fundamental work so we can continue to move towards a more peaceful, secure world for everyone.

Aportes Filantrópicos De Fundaciones Estadounidenses: América Latina, 2010–2012

Nov 25, 2014

Foundation Center;

This analysis is based on the research data sample of the Foundation Center, which includes allphilanthropic contributions of US $ 10,000 or more from 1,000 of the largest foundationsfrom United States. The data sample represents approximately half of the total fundsdonated by the universe of independent philanthropic foundations, business, community andoperatives of the United States. Therefore, the data in this report do not include contributionsphilanthropies of small foundations; support of corporate programs of direct contributions or ofpublic foundations; scholarships, direct contributions to individuals, or research scholarships; philanthropic contributions from private foundations to community foundations (to prevent donations from being computed twice); loans or investments linked to projects. This sample of research data differs a bit of the one used in the previous report, philanthropic contributions of foundations destined to Hispanics / Latinos in the United States and Latin America. For that reason, we advise you to proceed with caution when extracting conclusions regarding the differences in financing observed between the two reports.

Key Facts on Georgia Foundations 2013

Key Facts on Georgia Foundations 2013

Feb 15, 2013

Foundation Center; Georgia Center for Nonprofits; Georgia Grantmakers Alliance;

In 2010, the number of grantmaking independent, corporate, community, and operating foundations in Georgia declined 1.5 percent to 1,433. This was the second straight year the number of active foundations decreased since reaching a high of 1,501 prior to the onset of the recent economic crisis. Unlike the previous year, giving also shrank to pre-2008 levels, falling from $874 million in 2009 to $778 million in 2010. Assets for Georgia foundations, however, increased 8.1 percent between 2009 and 2010 to $11.8 billion. This suggests that Georgia foundation giving may have stabilized or even begun to rebound in 2011.

Untapped Potential: European Foundation Funding for Women and Girls (Highlights)

Untapped Potential: European Foundation Funding for Women and Girls (Highlights)

May 16, 2011

European Foundation Centre (EFC); Foundation Center; Mama Cash; Weisblatt & Associes;

Though the philanthropic sector in Europe is expansive and far-reaching, numbering approximately 110,000 foundations with annual expenditures of €100 billion, surprisingly little is known about the breadth of European foundations, the nature of their work, or the allocation of their funds. Yet data are critical to informed decisionmaking and effective philanthropy. It is in that spirit that Mama Cash, the world's oldest international women's fund, commissioned this research study to understand the scope, distribution and diversity of European-based funding, with a specific focus on women and girls.
